Sound of No Hands Clapping?

So far, this is a fairly plodding address. Very few flashes of humor or eloquence. My friend Jeff Yarbro, a former Gore aide, called from Tennessee with the line of the night: “People at home must be clapping less than the Supreme Court justices.”

After seven years at the helm, in his last State of The Union Address, his biggest applause line is a thank you to the troops. Not that the troops don't deserve applause, but it's like the line was placed in there out of necessity rather than sincerity. You've got to give them something to cheer for.

Al Gore never gave a memorable speech in his life.

Certainly nothing in the realm of Bush's first two speeches after 9/11.  Or his  first State of the Union after that event.

He's no Franklin Roosevelt or Jack Kennedy.  But he runs rings around the plodding, pedantic Gore.

Gore's Concession Speech in 2000 was brilliant, and I thought his 2000 and 2004 Convention Speeches were good as well.  Neither of Bush's post 9/11 Speeches were that great, just that sort of speech Bush more or less always gives.  To be fair to both of them though, we haven't had a great Presidential orator in 20 years.  One more reason to support Obama!
