Harpootlian Sighting! Twelve O'Clock!

Anyone who follows South Carolina politics had to be wondering when Dick Harpootlian--the sharp-tongued, bare-knuckled former state Democratic chair who frequently branded his political opponents "bastards" and "sons of bitches"-would sound off on the Obama-Hillary battle going on down there. Well, today he did, and he didn't disappoint, telling CNN that some of Bill Clinton's recent comments about Obama were intended to "suppresses the vote, demoralize voters, and distort the record" and that they were "reminiscent of Lee Atwater."

And that, in turn, prompted Clinton to get red-in-the-face angry (again) at a CNN reporter who asked for his response to Harpootlian's assessment:

"You live for this. This hurts the people of South Carolina," he said. "Because the people of South Carolina come to these meetings and ask questions about what they care about. And what they care about is not what's going to be in the news coverage tonight, because you don't care about it.

"What you care about is this. And the Obama people know that. So they just spin you up on this and you happily go along. I mean, the people don't care about this," he added. "They never ask about it. And you are determined to take this election away from them. And that's not right. That is not right. This election ought to belong to those people who are out here asking questions about their lives."

You know, Clinton would actually have a point if he wasn't completely full of it.

Gotta love it. You know , Jason. You and I might not have a whole lot in common, politically speaking, but I'd be happy to buy you a brew on the weight of those words.

Clinton's just acting angry because he knows it's the best way to get his spin out there. Fake like your angry, get the cameras on you, and then say Obama is a horrible person who is calling you racist.

And cleary he's trying to wedge hispanic voters against Obama in this "outburst."

Either he has a point, or he doesn't. I think he does. Or do you really think it would have been better for the man to suggest that Harpootlian and his bogus accusations be taken seriously?

Look, I prefer Edwards to Obama, and Obama to Hillary. But I think Bill has a point. If you want to suggest that the Clinton folks are at least as guilty as the Obama folks of playing these games, I don't disagree. But I think Bill's right - the media are mainly interested in the horserace and the mudslinging.

No, he doesn't have a point. Bill Clinton is campaigning for his wife. He is saying things about his wife's opponent. What other politicians say about what Bill Clinton is saying is a perfectly legit news story. His holier-than-thou "I'm just interested in what's on the minds of the people" crap is just that, because one of the things on the minds of the good people of South Carolina is what Bill Clinton has saiid and is saying about Barack Obama, and what other political figures think of it. Of course, they don't ask him about it--they don't want to get a shit storm from an ex-President. That's what we pay journalists for.

Another way of putting it would be, it's Bill Clinton who has taken their election away from them by inserting himself so forcefully into it.

Wait. What's Clinton's point? That political coverage is too horse racey?

Yeah, fighting this sad state of affairs has been Clinton's personal crusade for decades....at least, when he sees someone else gaining on his lead.

The comments section wasn't working in the original post in which Obama was originally quoted, but I just couldn't let it go. (That item was also by the Clinton-hating Jason Zengerle.) This is an egomaniacal, arrogant comment that elevates Obama above both his party and country. He'd rather see the Republicans win than Hillary, almost happy his supporters won't go to her, forgetting what's at stake if that happens. I go back and forth between HIllary and Obama, but statements like these only confirm my hesistance to support him. This "movement" he's leading seems to be all about him. Sorry, Barack, but this is a cause greater than ourselves, even you.

He doesn't have to like Hillary, but he will have to support her if she wins the nomination, and he'll have to encourage his voters to do so as well. Otherwise, he just might have to join his beloved Reagan in the "party of ideas."

Tell your friends in the media, Jason, that the more they bash Hillary, the more people like me gravitate to her. if you really want to sink her campaign, you might try doing the opposite.

There are now two threads. As haylekelse, Obama is speaking the truth. I have knocked on doors and canvassed and it is remarkable how many independents, and even some Democrats, say that under no circumstances will they vote for Hillary, though they support Obama. It's a fact. Bill is not helping change that fact either, but is reinforcing it.

Bill is in fact as bad as Rove and as bad as Lee Atwater. Bill continues to bring up that idiotic Obama-staffer-written "D Punjab" flyer that Obama condemned a year ago and says "Senator Obama called my wife a Democrat from the Punjab." On Bill's logic, Hillary is falsely calling Obama a Muslim because her staffers did so in Iowa three months ago, even though she condemned those who spread that email.

The reality is that Bill is a fundamentally intellectually dishonest scumbag. If Hillary gets the nomination, she will continue to unleash him, viewing him as the reason she won New Hampshire. Watch the polarization from the year 2000 come back and intensify, and watch distressing numbers of Democrats and Dem-leaning independents to throw their lot in with McCain or sit home. Watch the Dems blow an election they have no business blowing.

I meant to add in response to haylekelse that he/she is flat out wrong in saying that Obama "would rather see the Republicans win than Hillary." Obama said nothing of the sort. He only said that the profile of his supporters is such that many will not automatically go to Hillary. Tell me, why is Obama disabled from expressing that truth, whereas Bill has every right to spread lies and distortions and engage in rank dishonesty about Obama, all with Hillary's blessing? More importantly, tell me why Hillary is not being far more selfish than Barack in running that kind of campaign?

Oh stop now. You know that this is just one of those campaign things. Politicians are free to 'distort' whatever they please. Regular folks like you and me should never misunderstand this to be a lie. Only regular folks lie because we live in low rent vocab dimensions. Doesn't everyone know that? Hmmmmmm? And you have the cojonnes to think that meaning of 'IS' is what it was meant to make the other person think 'IS' meant at the time. That kind of constraint is much too demeaning and thoroughly pedestrian for the chosen vocabulizers and sage twisters. Scattered sticks and entrails.

Tell us how it is Hil and Bill.

Hayleykesle -- to paraphrase you, the more you try to scare people into support Hillary, the more people like me and some others here will try to distance ourselves from her candidacy. If you are trying to shore up her candidacy and gain more support for her, you may in fact be doing the opposite.

I'm one of those Obama supporters that won't be backing Hillary if she wins the nomination, and the majority of Obama supporters that I know feel the same. I'm not sure whether I'll just stay home on election day or even vote for McCain (he's the only Republican candidate I would consider voting for, any of the others and I'm definitely sitting this one out), but I can't in good conscience cast my ballot for Hillary. I can't stomach supporting someone who would try to disenfranchise voters because an endorsement didn't go her way, someone who would engage in race baiting, someone who would go out there and lie so blatantly and use the full force of a popular former president to dishonestly tear down one of the most promising young members of their own party. That kind of behavior tends to leave supporters of the opponent with a bad taste in their mouths. Her and her husband have ran an incredibly shameless and dirty campaign ever since Obama started to pose a threat to her inevitability.

I would have no problems getting behind Edwards if he were the nominee, but Hillary will never get my vote.

"Full of it"? This is the commentary we get on this blog?

Clinton also pointed out, in that same quote, that the two African-Americans who actually worked with Martin Luther King and who were still active in politics--John Lewis and Andrew Young--had both made clear that they had no problem with the Clinton campaign.

From Jason's tone and lack of substance here, I think the Obamaites are beginning to feel the collapse of their campaign.

pccostello - one of those two African American supporters also made the claim that Bill is indeed "blacker" than Obama because Bill's probably been with more black women.

www.youtube.com/watch

Not exactly the kind of endorsement the Clinton campaign should be pushing - although heaven knows it fits with Bill's profile.

Kinda like the LA LAkers endorsements (I'm a huge fan, btw) - Magic, who's an all time great but, let's face it, not an intellectual heavyweight and whose no holds barred sex life is a matter of public record, publicly endorses Hillary, while Kareem, all time great and now well regarded African American historian (and coach for a basketball team on an Indian reservation), is fully behind Barack. Guess whose opinion matters more to me?
