Is a Unified Field Theory of Hillary Hatred Possible?

Ross Baker gives a quote to the NYT about Hillary that shows why political scientists make bad political strategists:

"Edwards and Obama are still waltzing around her rather than hitting on doubts about her that would really resonate with voters," said Ross K. Baker, a professor of political science at Rutgers University.

"One absolutely devastating accusation that could resonate is that she is gullible--she bought into two false story lines, one from her husband about Monica Lewinsky and one from President Bush about Iraq," Mr. Baker added.

That's a devastating accusation all right--but it's devastating to the candidate who makes it. Obama (and Edwards less so) can certainly argue that Hillary went hookline* hook, line, and sinker for Bush's Iraq flimflammery. But if they then link her gullibility on that to her gullibility in defending Bill during the early days of the Lewinsky scandal, well, then they'll tick off probably about 75 percent of the people who vote in Democratic primaries. And Republicans in the general election will face the same problem: They'll resurrect the ugly days of the Clinton scandal, but they can't compare Hillary's behavior there to her vote for the war--since the GOP base doesn't fault her for that vote.

All this raises an interesting question: Hillary's obviously a deeply polarizing figure, but is she in some ways helped by the fact that so many people hate her for so many different reasons? I mean, it's hard for a candidate to craft an anti-Hillary message that doesn't wind up alienating a good number of Hillary haters.

I'm imagining Giuliani's ads against Hillary:  "Hillary is so gullible, she stood by her husband even when he was cheating on her.  I, on the other hand, have divorced my wives for much simpler reasons." "Giuliani:  Tough on terrorists, tough on marriage."

I disagree with your premise - honesty and overly calculating are good hits on Hillary that everyone can appreciate - even her fans, who see her as a strong political fighter.

At any rate - I think the best way to hit her is just to remind people that she's polarizing. Ads that attacked  her electability or reminded people about the divisions she causes would make everyone remember their own reason why they dislike her without pointing to any particular thing.

Great post. That particular quote jumped out at me too -  I had to read it twice to see if ol' Ross Baker was in fact saying that attacking Hillary for believing/defending Bill was really a good idea. He was, and all I could do was shake my head.

As an Edwards supporter, I'm pleased to see JRE (and, to a more muted extent, BHO) make what I think has been a strong, issue-oriented case against her candidacy. Despite Bill Richardson's insistence otherwise, it hasn't been "personal" in the way Baker's attack would be personal. Indeed, nothing would end my support of Edwards faster than him attacking Hillary for anything Monica-related.

The Hillary "haters" on pretty much only on the blogs. Don't you guys look at any polling? She's not all that more divisive than the others. All of their negatives are fairly close these days, and you can be sure the Republicans will drive up negatives for whoever wins the nomination. That's what they do.

twtrader: I know a lot of Democratic non-blogger who don't like Hillary. As to the polling, according to the polls John Kerry is our president, but we know how well the polling turned out.

Why do you think the Republicans are running against her even now, before the first primary? They salivate at the prospect of Hillary as the nominee. They will destroy her on security and all of these women Hillary supporters will pull the lever for the Republican because as much as they like the idea of a woman in charge right now America needs a strong leader to protect us. If and when America returns to a Clinton (Bill) type normalcy of peace and prosperity, then a women can be elected. Right now, no.
