Is Daylight Saving Time A Total Waste?

Daylight Saving Time ends today—but should we scrap it once and for all? It's doubtful that DST actually helps us conserve energy, which was the original logic. Here are a raft of studies on the subject: Most find that while households do use less lighting during DST, thanks to the longer, brighter afternoons, they also end up cranking up the A/C more, which makes it either a wash or a net loser for energy use. (Hey, if that's the case, maybe we should just permanently set our clocks back two or three hours and live in darkness so that we can really start conserving...) On the, er, bright side, it's possible that DST reduces traffic fatalities and even violent crime, so perhaps it's not a total waste.

A few years ago when Sen. Lisa Murkowski was running for election (after being appointed by her dear old dad), she remarked at one point that the single issue that generated the most mail and email from constituents was Daylight Savings Time. For some reason, the elimination of Daylight Savings Time is a cherished goal of Alaska cranks, despite the fact that it only really matters for maybe a month or so thanks to the very long days during most of the DST time period.

What about traffic?  Isn't i possible that a lot of people will stay off the roads if it is still dark?

Interestingly, one study found that gasoline consumption went *up* slightly when Congress extended DST in 2007, so yeah, it seems like the longer daylight hours encourage people to drive a bit more.

As someone who lives in a rural area, takes care of several acres and loves recreational sports, the extra hour at the end of the day is wonderful. I couldn't say with certainty that it saves energy but it gives me extra time to expend my own.

Definitely not a waste.

It give the appearance of making spring last longer and fall come later.  Keep it the way it is now, agreed with srodar.
