TNR TV: Politics of Green Panel Discussion

TNR hosted the Politics of Green panel discussion in Denver on Thursday. Participants included: Felix Frankfurter Professor of Law at Harvard Cass Sunstein, Congressman George Miller, Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution David Sandalow, Co-Founder and Vice President for Public Affairs of Third Way Matt Bennett, Rep. Ed Markey, Sen. Jeff Bingaman, and Executive Director of the Sierra Club Carl Pope. The discussion was moderated by TNR Editor Franklin Foer.

Rep. Ed Markey discusses the cap and trade carbon limitation proposal that would invest funds in alternative energy projects and Amazon preservation.

Matt Bennett, Co-Founder and Vice President for Public Affairs of Third Way, raises the importance of preparing the public for the transformation of the economy. "We have to make sure that the people understand what we're getting into with this tremendous transformation of the economy," Bennett says. Carl Pope, Executive Director of the Sierra Club, follows by advocating smart energy investments that won't raise energy bills.

Cass Sunstein, Felix Frankfurter Professor of Law at Harvard, and Sen. Jeff Bingaman compare the McCain and Obama cap and trade plans. "It's not realistic, I don't believe, to think [Senator McCain] would undertake the form of national leadership that's required to get the reorientation of the economy," says Sunstein.
