About the Environment & Energy Blog

You may notice that this blog looks a little different. The phrase “powered by BP,” which appeared in the banner when we launched yesterday, led to some (justifiable) confusion about the blog’s relationship with BP. But TNR’s agreement with BP was and is purely an advertising deal, and the company never had any say in our editorial content. Today, the TNR business staff and BP decided to remove their logo placement to make sure that relationship is clear.

Thanks for reading, and please keep checking the blog regularly--we have a lot of exciting environmental coverage planned in the days and weeks ahead.

Maybe BP should power The Plank!  Or The Spine, if it wasn't already powered by Martin Peretz's ego, which incidentally should be explored as an energy source that could significantly reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.

Anyway, I've made several comments about how I wish TNR would cover science and technology more.  "Environment & Energy" isn't quite what I was asking for, but it's close, so I give you props.  Still, couldn't you have stuck with your tried and true naming convention?  Maybe The Leaf?  The Reactor?

TEP will be happy. His heading was spinning on its axis yesterday. I think he was hoping for a big name American energy company to float the tab for blog on the environment and energy. I suspect TNR couldn't find one. My suggestion is going the NASCAR or Pro Cycling route and get a bunch of smaller tech companies that actually are doing things for the environment and addressing renewable energies. We need more Flash ads on this sight anyway.

Shouldn't be too difficult to sign deals with green providers that are trying to reach the TNR demographic. I'm sure Ford would love to increase awareness of its new hybrid line. Must be dozens of solar etc providers would sign up as well.

Good call...let us hope that first impressions are not indelible...

guys, before you do something like this, send out a survey monkey or call.  That was a pretty bone headed move.

All better....

oh, btw - not to nitpick, but someone should tell the BP ad agency that "energy security" is Putin-Mobutu's favored locution, a rather sinister phrase that means security for Russian bandit-thugs' wealth and insecurity for Russia's neighbors... Kind of a 21c equivalent of Japan's "co-prosperity sphere"...

The right move.

(I'd love to know how much the advertising deal was worth.)

Ah, yes, the blog benefits greatly from the weeding. Well done.

Having BP front and center no more disqualifies information than not having BP front and center qualifies it, IMHO.

I hope y'all don't obsess on environmental prose at the expense of poetry. You don't have to get all Sand County Almanacky on us but a little Edward Abbey would keep things interesting.

Such as, the blessed solitude of public transportation, the heat of the compost heap in winter, the autobiography of faded old comforters patched rather than thrown away, the conspiratorial joy at rainwater coaxed into cisterns, the Milky Way hidden behind electric glare but waiting patiently above for a solitary lamp, the only one for miles, to wick itself out.
